PROJECT BROTCHY - A Scientific Account

Hello, residents! For those who still don’t know me (or who have only seen me sprinting down the hallway with a smoking test tube in my hand and Celsius barking behind me), I’m Alfred - though everyone around here just calls me the Scientist.

Today, at Jenny’s request, I’m here to tell you, in full detail, the story behind Brotchy and how he came to be. So come along with me on this one - and forgive me in advance, because you all know blogging isn’t exactly my strong suit. I’m much better at jotting things down in a lab notebook than writing pretty paragraphs, but I’ll do my best!

STARTING FROM THE BEGINNING

As you may have noticed, this research goes back much further than it might seem. It all started after the chaos of the Arrival Season had passed, when something inside me changed. I decided to focus my energy on reconnecting with the Alfred I used to be back at the beginning, when I officially moved to the island and chose to dedicate my entire life to understanding pets, their behaviors, and how I could help make them even more incredible for all of you.

I kept thinking back on everything we’ve created together: mutations, mounts, special-edition pets, even bipeds, whose discovery I followed closely, almost as if I were watching an entirely new species come to life before my eyes. Each of those projects affected me in a different way - and yes, I know, I cry easily. Celsius reminds me of that all the time - and revisiting those memories filled me with an enormous sense of nostalgia.

It was right there, sitting in the middle of the laboratory mess with him lying at my feet, that I decided: it was time to return to that place again.

I kept asking myself: how could I create something as special, as revolutionary, as everything that had already come before and that you all loved so much? That question spun around in my head for weeks. And just like that, without any fanfare, the research began.

THE RESEARCH

At first, I wanted to do the obvious thing: take everything I already knew about embryology and proteomics and simply combine it. I separated genetic samples from several species that had already passed through here — a little of the resilience found in mount pets, some of the adaptability of mutation pets, even a trace of the curiosity I first identified way back when I developed the Capybara.

Each combination gave me another piece of the puzzle, but none of them had... a soul, you know? Something was missing — that extra little spark that would make this one different from anything I had ever created before.

I spent weeks shut away in here, surrounded by clipboards, while Celsius complained that I kept forgetting his mealtimes (and quite rightly, I should add). I reread my own studies on the Pet Fusion system about ten times, searching for some clue I might have overlooked.

Then, one late night, as I stared at the sky through the laboratory window, it hit me: I was trying to solve this using only things that already existed in our world.

What if the missing piece wasn’t from here at all?

That was when I remembered Sky was away traveling — you know what she’s like, always incredibly proactive — so I decided to take a chance and make a rather unusual request: could she possibly bring back a sample of something, from wherever she was, that didn’t belong to our universe?

I’ll admit, I had absolutely no hope of getting an answer. But a few days later, she returned with a tiny vial, glowing in a way I had never seen before.

I immediately named it Stardust.

The moment the Stardust came into contact with the combined DNA I had already been developing, everything changed. The samples that had previously looked like nothing more than “meaningless” genetic material under the microscope began reacting on their own, reorganizing themselves almost as though they were deciding what they wanted to become.

It was the biggest “EUREKA!” moment of my entire career — sorry, I know I get a little excited about this sort of thing!

THE FAILURES

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. In fact, I think you all saw very clearly that it wasn’t, because the security camera footage Jenny shared certainly doesn’t lie!

There were a few explosions (small ones, I promise) and some rather peculiar results along the way. You know that little problem I have where, every now and then, I try to clone Celsius and accidentally end up creating tiny monsters instead? Well... it showed up again. Several times, actually, throughout this research.

One attempt came out with far too many legs. Another did nothing but make a sound I still haven’t managed to identify in any catalog — and believe me, I know my catalogs.

There was even one that decided it preferred floating to walking, which was adorable, but not particularly practical.

I laughed, I got frustrated, I wrote everything down (after all, every experiment gives us information, even when it goes wrong), and little by little, I kept adjusting the DNA.

I genuinely thought you wouldn’t like those versions nearly as much, so I kept refining everything until I reached the result you eventually got to meet.

And, speaking from a very personal point of view here: I think he turned out perfect.

THE FINAL RESULT

Once I managed to stabilize the DNA, the hardest part of the entire research process began - not because the science was lacking, but because the purpose was.

I had a stable, beautiful, functional pet in my hands... but he was generic.

And I didn’t want that.

I wanted every little thing you do in the game to somehow be able to affect and transform Brotchy.

I explored several possibilities. I considered tying his growth to every mini-game you played. I even sketched out a treat-collecting system. But none of those ideas truly felt right - because not every resident loves doing the same things here on the island, and I didn’t want only those who played in one particular way to be able to watch Brotchy transform.

That was when I came up with the idea for what you now know as Pet Need: a system capable of bringing together many different activities, in many different ways, and turning all of them into points. That way, no matter what a resident loves doing most around here, they can still help their pet evolve into something that reflects their own lifestyle and the way they play.

When I finally saw it working for the very first time, I’ll admit I cried a little bit. (Celsius can confirm it - he was right there beside me.)

Alfred and Sky watching Brotchy appear.

And that’s how, by combining the Stardust Sky brought back from so far away, all the genetics I had already been studying, and this idea of making the pet a reflection of each individual resident, I was finally able to create Brotchy as you know him today.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this account. And if you’d like to learn more about the research behind everything we create, send us your questions on our social media channels and I’ll ask Jenny to pass them all along to me.

After all, with great experiments come great responsibilities - and Brotchy is living proof of that.

Until the next discovery,
Alfred, the Scientist
